I had no issues with the system. I used my paypal account also with no issues. Access code HPHL was sent home Friday, I received two copies, one for each of my children. Sorry to hear of those who are having issues with the system.

I agree with the other parents that have commented. I have a hard enough time getting to the newsletter. I feel hot lunch orders will go way down with this way of ordering. For someone who is in front of a computer all day, maybe they will get a chance to check in to the hot lunch choices, for those who are not, children will just miss out. Definitely not a user friendly program:(

this still is not working. we have a paypal account and its direction to payment is coming up as an error. if this is how you will be doing hot lunches, please iron it out so we can at least order

I agree with Jaylene. This is very frustrating and not user friendly. Still struggling to find the link to register. And for a access code that was sent home with lat paper lunch order form good luck finding that. I am going to find hard to remember to come to the website frequently to check and then order for my child. I think we could go green in other areas and keep to paper for this one. Not liking the system

This new online thing is not user friendly and very frustrating to say the least. If fundraising is your goal with the hot lunches, requiring parents to have to check the website often to find out when they are will be will lead to a major reduction in funds raised. I understand the desire to go green but this is not effective. I tried to set up an account and its requiring a case sensitive code, which I don't believe I have gotten or even recall hearing about. Not a good system.

A very big thank you to all the volunteers who helped with this year's SchoolSpirit wear! The hoodies, t-shirts and toques arrived on time and were delivered with a smile. The kids look great and a small profit was passed on to the PAC to fund the many good things they do at the school. Great job Heather Park!

While I appreciate the additional information and explaination, with all our public schools facing the same situation last year (re: labour dispute), this does nothing to explain how Foothills, Southridge and Pinewood ranked so much better than Heather Park. We were all in the same boat and yet other boats floated while Heather Park's sank.

It leaves me very worried.

It is important to note that the Fraser Institute overall rating out of 10 is not strictly based on FSA scores. This rating is based on a “weighted average summary standardized score” for each school. According to page 87 of the report found at http://www.fraserinstitute.... they weight the results as follows:

45% - average scores for the 6 FSA tests

10% - gender-gap scores for each of the grade-7 reading and grade-7 numeracy tests

10%;- percentage of tests not written

25% - percentage of tests below expectations

Even though the media reporting leads parents to the conclusion that the rankings are based on academic achievement as measured by the FSA tests that is not the case. The Fraser Institute is attempting to provide a simplistic, one dimensional, numerical score to enable comparisons between schools based loosely on FSA results and, the way they calculate it, a very small difference in actual achievement can hugely influence the reported ranking. In most areas Heather Park FSA scores didn't change a great deal but the way the Fraser Institute calculates their index over emphasized those changes.

Ranking schools based on a limited, made up index is like comparing apples to oranges. One dimension does not define a school.

As Steve says, Heather Park provides the students with a whole lot more than just one dimension. Not only do the staff and teachers do an exceptional job of looking after our students' academic requirements but they also offer a lot of programs that are never going to be reflected in any province wide assessment.

FSA results are important to each student, teacher and school. Used properly, they can help direct educational resources to areas that need strengthening. Using them to manufacture a simple one number score to “compare” schools against one another is just plain silly. You cannot reduce a system as complex as a school to a single number.

Andrew - a good point around the clarification of the wording there, it's more "as a result of the teacher job action and decisions made by SD57 senior administration" rather than strictly "due to teacher job action".

From what I've been told, teachers will assist with outside of class supervision once other staff principals, vice principals, and school board office employees) are called in. School board office employees will be traveling to schools in the area twice a day, before and after school to help supervise, but adding in traveling to different schools for recess as well was apparently more difficult to schedule for them - again, from what I've been told.

It seems that this was a district wide decision, rather than something controlled by individual principals. Kelowna, Vernon, and Parksville/Qualicum districts have also apparently cancelled recess for their districts.

As a point of clarification, recess has not been cancelled due to teacher job action. Rather, teachers are still permitted to supervise at recess; however, there is an expectation that the principals and vice principals will first put forth every effort to arrange for non-teacher supervision (including having the administration perform such duties). Whenever such non-teacher supervision cannot be arranged the teachers are permitted to provide such supervision. As such, it would be more accurate to say that recess is being cancelled because SD57 and/or the administration are unable / unwilling to put forth the effort / time to even try and make such arrangements. It seems that this is more of a public relations ploy from the SD to make teachers look like the bad guys.
